Once home to a Ford factory that manufactured Model-T automobiles, our building has a storied history that is uniquely Dothan.
Dothan, incorporated in November 1885, began with a humble population of less than 200 people. However, the city's trajectory changed when the Alabama Midland Railroad connected Dothan to Montgomery in 1889. With this newfound connectivity, the city's population soared, and its economy diversified. As the era of turpentine distilling and lumbering waned, farming, with cotton as the chief cash crop, ushered in prosperity. Downtown Dothan's skyline started to evolve, characterized predominantly by one and two-story red brick structures, which later expanded to include more impressive three-story edifices.
One name that prominently features in Dothan's commercial history is George Y. Malone. In 1894, he laid the foundation for the Dothan Carriage Company. Over its storied existence, numerous Malones would come to steer the business's helm. A significant milestone occurred in 1907 when the company, then operating under the moniker Malone-Harrison Ford, introduced Dothan to its very first automobile - a Ford Model R.
By 1923, the building that we call home at NOW 193 was erected at the intersection of South St. Andrews and Crawford streets. George Y. Malone II, recognized for his business acumen, would later journey to Dothan to rejuvenate the three-decade-old auto dealership.
Situated at 193 S. St. Andrews Street, NOW 193 — the former Malone Ford Building — today stands as a beacon of Dothan's rich history. Despite minor architectural changes, the exterior has remained strikingly consistent over the past 80 years, retaining vestiges of its original charm. If one looks closely, they can still discern the markings where vintage auto signs once adorned its brick exterior.
Over three years, NOW 193’s owners and developers painstakingly worked to restore the building to its historical glory while infusing modern finishes that would infuse the past... into now.
